How to Get Transportation to a VA Appointment in Florida
A free ride and travel reimbursement are different programs; ask the Veteran’s VA facility which route fits before the appointment.

For a ride, use VA’s VetRide service or call the Veterans Transportation Program representative at the VA facility. For mileage or other eligible travel costs, file a separate Beneficiary Travel claim; approval for an appointment does not automatically create a ride or reimbursement.
What to have in front of you
- Veteran’s full name and VA patient information
- Appointment date, time, facility, clinic, and address
- Pickup address and phone number
- Wheelchair, oxygen, walker, escort, or transfer needs
- Return-trip plan and appointment end estimate
What to say when someone answers
“I need transportation to a VA health appointment at [facility] on [date]. Please check VTS or VetRide availability, required notice, accessibility, escort rules, pickup window, return process, and whether travel reimbursement is separate.”
Small but useful: Write down the person’s name, the date, the exact next step, and when you should call again.
Do this in order

Confirm the appointment belongs to the VA facility or approved community-care route.

Request the ride as early as the facility requires through VetRide or the local transportation representative.

Repeat the pickup address, accessibility needs, companion approval, pickup window, and return instructions.

Ask separately whether the Veteran or approved caregiver qualifies for Beneficiary Travel reimbursement and how to file it.
What happens next
The local transportation program checks eligibility, capacity, route, and accessibility. Services and advance-notice rules vary by facility; travel-pay claims use a separate eligibility and filing process.
If they say “we’ll put you on the list”
Ask about another VA transportation option, DAV or community partner van, a different appointment time, or telehealth. Never assume a travel-pay approval will provide an actual vehicle.
