What to Do While Waiting for Brevard Meals on Wheels
The wait depends on funding and local route capacity, so build a temporary plan rather than waiting without a date.
Start here
Call Aging Matters at 321-639-8770 to confirm the application is active, contact information is correct, and the person’s current needs are documented. Ask about the private-pay option, which may start sooner if there is room on the route, and Seniors at Lunch congregate meal sites.
What to have in front of you
- Intake or assessment date and staff contact
- Current phone, address, emergency contact, and delivery access notes
- Any change in health, caregiver availability, food supply, or ability to cook
- Days of food remaining and immediate dietary constraints
- List of people or services that can cover specific days temporarily
What to say when someone answers
“The Meals on Wheels assessment was completed on [date]. Please confirm the application is active, whether needs should be updated, whether private-pay route space exists, and which Seniors at Lunch or temporary food options are closest.”
Small but useful: Write down the person’s name, the date, the exact next step, and when you should call again.
Do this in order
- 1
Ask whether anything is incomplete and how the program prioritizes current need. Aging Matters says wait time varies with the list, funding, volunteer drivers, and route availability.
- 2
Report a meaningful change instead of assuming the original assessment still reflects the situation.
- 3
Ask for private-pay pricing and route space; paying does not bypass a route that is already full.
- 4
Use congregate meals, food pantries, grocery delivery, family rotations, or hospital/clinic social-work referrals as separate temporary layers. Confirm dietary fit and delivery availability directly.
What happens next
The person remains on the prioritized list until funded route space is available or circumstances change. Some parts of Brevard may wait longer because demand is higher. Staff should contact the household when service can start.
If the first answer doesn’t solve it
Set a specific follow-up date and ask who to call. If there is no food for the next day, say that clearly and call 211 for current emergency food options; Meals on Wheels enrollment is not an emergency delivery service.
