How to Get Utility Shutoff Help for a Brevard Senior
Call while the service is still on if possible and keep the shutoff notice in front of you.
Start here
Call the Brevard-area Elder Helpline at 407-514-0019 and ask for the local Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program provider. EHEAP requires a documented heating or cooling emergency, at least one household member age 60 or older, and qualifying household income.
What to have in front of you
- Utility bill and shutoff, delinquency, or disconnection notice
- Photo ID and proof of age for the household member 60+
- Proof of household income for all members requested by the provider
- Proof of address and household size
- Utility account number and amount needed to resolve the emergency
What to say when someone answers
“A Brevard household with someone age 60 or older has a documented cooling or heating emergency. The shutoff date is [date]. Please connect me to the EHEAP provider and tell me exactly what documents are needed today.”
Small but useful: Write down the person’s name, the date, the exact next step, and when you should call again.
Do this in order
- 1
Call before the shutoff date and state the date in the first sentence.
- 2
Ask for the local EHEAP intake route, not only general utility assistance.
- 3
Send only through the provider’s approved secure method and keep proof.
- 4
Call the utility separately, say an assistance application is pending, and ask what hold or payment arrangement is available.
What happens next
The local provider verifies eligibility and the energy emergency. Approved payments generally go to the vendor, not the household. Funding and maximum crisis benefits can change.
If they say “we’ll put you on the list”
Ask the Elder Helpline for every other active energy-assistance route and call 211. Ask the utility about a medical or hardship extension, but do not assume an application automatically stops disconnection.
