How Working Affects SSI and Medicaid
How wages change the SSI check and when Medicaid can continue even after the cash payment reaches zero.

SSI generally reduces as countable income rises, but work incentives can exclude some earnings and expenses. Florida Medicaid may continue under Section 1619(b) even when earnings eliminate the SSI cash payment.
What to have in front of you
- The notice, bill, decision, or discharge paperwork connected to the problem
- The person’s full name, date of birth, address, insurance information, and identification
- A short timeline with dates, names, phone calls, and what changed
- Copies of medical, school, financial, or care records that directly support the request
What to say when someone answers
“I receive SSI and Medicaid and I am starting work. I want a written explanation of how wages, exclusions, and Section 1619(b) affect both benefits.”
Small but useful: Write down the person’s name, the date, the exact next step, and when you should call again.
Do this in order

Report the job, start date, expected hours, and wages to Social Security.

Keep every pay stub and report wages monthly using an approved method.

Ask whether student earned-income exclusions, impairment-related work expenses, PASS, or blind work expenses apply.

Before assuming Medicaid ends, ask specifically about 1619(b) and any individualized threshold.
What happens next
The SSI payment may change month by month after income exclusions. Medicaid can follow separate continuation rules, so a zero cash payment does not always mean loss of coverage.

If Medicaid appears to close, contact Social Security and Florida Medicaid immediately and use the written 1619(b) decision or wage records to correct the case.
