What to Do When a Family Member Is Baker Acted in Florida

Start by finding the receiving facility and recording the arrival time, because the examination period begins when the person reaches that facility. Give the treatment team useful facts even when privacy rules limit what staff can tell you.
What to have in front of you
- The notice, bill, decision, or discharge paperwork connected to the problem
- The person’s full name, date of birth, address, insurance information, and identification
- A short timeline with dates, names, phone calls, and what changed
- Copies of medical, school, financial, or care records that directly support the request
What to say when someone answers
“My family member was taken for an involuntary examination. I need help identifying the receiving facility, understanding the timeline, and giving the treatment team information safely.”
Small but useful: Write down the person’s name, the date, the exact next step, and when you should call again.
Do this in order

If there is still immediate danger, call 911. Otherwise call the transporting law-enforcement agency and ask which receiving facility was used.

Call the facility, ask for the unit or intake desk, and give staff the person’s name, date of birth, medications, diagnoses, recent threats, and safe discharge concerns.

Ask what date and time the person arrived, what the current legal status is, and how the person can sign a release naming you.

Write down the facility, unit, staff name, arrival time, and any court or discharge deadline you are given.
What happens next
The facility must examine the person and then release them, offer voluntary care, or file for further involuntary services. Privacy rules may prevent staff from confirming details, but they can still receive information from you.
If they say “we’ll put you on the list”
If nobody will confirm a location, call the transporting agency again, then check both major Brevard receiving systems: Circles of Care and Palm Point. Do not post identifying information publicly.
