How to Get Emergency Prescription Refills Before a Florida Hurricane
The pharmacy, insurer, prescriber, and emergency-declaration steps to replace or refill medication early.

Call the pharmacy first and ask it to process an emergency refill under Florida disaster rules or an insurer override. Do this before local closures, and ask the prescriber for new orders when controlled-substance or timing rules prevent an automatic refill.
What to have in front of you
- The notice, bill, decision, or discharge paperwork connected to the problem
- The person’s full name, date of birth, address, insurance information, and identification
- A short timeline with dates, names, phone calls, and what changed
- Copies of medical, school, financial, or care records that directly support the request
What to say when someone answers
“A hurricane may interrupt access to this medication. Please check the emergency refill or vacation override, tell me what insurance rejects, and contact the prescriber if a new order is required.”
Small but useful: Write down the person’s name, the date, the exact next step, and when you should call again.
