How to Get Dementia Respite Through Florida’s ADI Program
ADI can include in-home, facility, emergency, and extended respite for qualifying dementia situations.

Call the Brevard-area Elder Helpline at 407-514-0019 and ask specifically for Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative respite. Florida says ADI serves adults 18 and older with probable Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia that affects daily activities and can include emergency respite and extended care up to 30 days.
What to have in front of you
- Diagnosis or provider information about probable dementia
- Examples of how memory or thinking affects daily living
- Supervision needs, wandering risk, behavior, sleep, and personal-care tasks
- Caregiver health, availability, and the exact reason respite is needed
- Preferred in-home or facility setting and any urgent dates
What to say when someone answers
“I am caring for someone with probable dementia that affects daily activities. I need an ADI screening for in-home or facility respite and need to know whether emergency or extended respite applies.”
Small but useful: Write down the person’s name, the date, the exact next step, and when you should call again.

What happens next
The local aging network assesses eligibility, need, and available funding. ADI respite may be short-term and prioritized; it is not the same as permanent placement or round-the-clock ongoing home care.
If they say “we’ll put you on the list”
Ask whether emergency or extended respite has a different process, then ask to be screened for National Family Caregiver Support, RELIEF, and SMMC LTC as parallel routes.
