How to Defer a Florida Standard Diploma to Keep Transition Services
Why accepting the diploma can end public-school services and what the IEP team must discuss before graduation.

Some eligible students can defer receipt of a standard diploma while continuing approved transition education or services. The decision must be made through the IEP process before the student exits.
What to have in front of you
- The notice, bill, decision, or discharge paperwork connected to the problem
- The person’s full name, date of birth, address, insurance information, and identification
- A short timeline with dates, names, phone calls, and what changed
- Copies of medical, school, financial, or care records that directly support the request
What to say when someone answers
“Before this student receives a diploma, I want the IEP team to explain eligibility for deferral, available 18–22 transition programs, deadlines, and what services end if the diploma is accepted.”
Small but useful: Write down the person’s name, the date, the exact next step, and when you should call again.
Do this in order

Request an IEP meeting well before graduation and put the diploma-deferral question in writing.

Review graduation requirements, transition goals, postsecondary program options, transportation, job training, and continued FAPE eligibility.

Ask the team to document whether the student meets deferral conditions and the exact program that will continue.

Keep the signed IEP, graduation notices, and written decision; appeal promptly if required procedures were not followed.
What happens next
The IEP team documents the graduation and transition plan. Services generally end when the student exits with the diploma or ages out under applicable rules.
If they say “we’ll put you on the list”
If staff say deferral is unavailable, ask for prior written notice identifying the law, facts, and options considered, then contact FDLRS, Family Network on Disabilities, or legal help.
