Social Security reevaluates childhood SSI recipients under adult disability rules after age 18. Build evidence around the young adult’s ability to sustain work-related tasks, not only school diagnoses or childhood eligibility.
What to have in front of you
- The notice, bill, decision, or discharge paperwork connected to the problem
- The person’s full name, date of birth, address, insurance information, and identification
- A short timeline with dates, names, phone calls, and what changed
- Copies of medical, school, financial, or care records that directly support the request
What to say when someone answers
“My child receives SSI and is turning 18. I want to confirm the redetermination timeline, forms, evidence, and benefit-continuation rights if the decision is unfavorable.”
Small but useful: Write down the person’s name, the date, the exact next step, and when you should call again.
Do this in order

Gather current medical records, psychological testing, IEPs, transition evaluations, job-coaching records, and failed work attempts.

Ask providers and teachers to describe pace, supervision, attendance, communication, behavior, stamina, and task completion.

Return every Social Security and DDS form by the deadline and attend requested examinations.

If benefits are stopped, appeal promptly and ask about statutory benefit continuation and Section 301.
What happens next
SSA applies adult initial-claim rules and mails a written decision. The medical-improvement standard used in ordinary reviews does not apply.
If they say “we’ll put you on the list”
If records still describe the person only as a child or student, request updated adult-function statements. Protect the short continuation deadline even while gathering more evidence.
