How to Keep Disability Payments During an Appeal
The separate, short deadline for asking Social Security to continue payments after a medical cessation.

When Social Security says an existing disability is ending, appeal and separately request benefit continuation within the deadline on the notice—often 10 days for a medical cessation. Filing only the appeal may not keep payments running.
What to have in front of you
- The notice, bill, decision, or discharge paperwork connected to the problem
- The person’s full name, date of birth, address, insurance information, and identification
- A short timeline with dates, names, phone calls, and what changed
- Copies of medical, school, financial, or care records that directly support the request
What to say when someone answers
“I am appealing the decision that my disability ended, and I am also requesting statutory benefit continuation while the appeal is pending.”
Small but useful: Write down the person’s name, the date, the exact next step, and when you should call again.

Read the notice for both the appeal deadline and the shorter payment-continuation deadline.

Contact Social Security immediately and make both requests; ask how to document the continuation election.

Keep proof of the request and copies of all forms.

Plan for the possibility that continued benefits may become an overpayment if the final appeal is lost.
What happens next
Payments may continue through specified appeal levels while Social Security reviews the cessation. The notice explains repayment risk and further appeal rights.
If they say “we’ll put you on the list”
If Social Security says the continuation request was late, ask for the decision in writing and submit a good-cause statement with proof of when the notice arrived or why action was impossible.
