How to Apply for SSI and SSDI at the Same Time
A single application path that screens for both disability programs instead of making you guess which one fits.

Start a Social Security disability application and ask to be screened for both SSDI and SSI. SSDI is based mainly on work credits; SSI also looks at income and resources, and some people qualify for both.
What to have in front of you
- The notice, bill, decision, or discharge paperwork connected to the problem
- The person’s full name, date of birth, address, insurance information, and identification
- A short timeline with dates, names, phone calls, and what changed
- Copies of medical, school, financial, or care records that directly support the request
What to say when someone answers
“I want to file for disability and be screened for both SSDI and SSI, including any benefits based on another person’s work record.”
Small but useful: Write down the person’s name, the date, the exact next step, and when you should call again.
Do this in order

Create or sign in to a my Social Security account and begin the disability application.

List every condition and explain functional limits—sitting, standing, concentration, attendance, lifting, social interaction—not diagnoses alone.

Provide complete treatment sources, medication side effects, work history, and the date work stopped or dropped below a sustainable level.

Save confirmation numbers and answer every follow-up from Social Security or Florida Disability Determinations by the deadline.
What happens next
Social Security handles the non-medical application and sends the medical decision to Florida Disability Determinations. You may be contacted for records, forms, or an examination.
If they say “we’ll put you on the list”
If records are missing, send them yourself or give exact provider contact information. If the application is denied, protect the 60-day appeal deadline instead of starting over.
