How to Apply for Florida Medicaid for a Child With Disabilities
Start with the correct Medicaid pathway, because household coverage, SSI-linked Medicaid, and disability-service programs use different processes.

For ordinary family-related Medicaid, apply through Florida MyACCESS or call DCF at 1-866-762-2237. A child receiving SSI may have a separate SSI-linked route, while APD services and waiver enrollment begin with APD and are not completed by a MyACCESS application alone.
What to have in front of you
- Child’s birth certificate, Social Security number, and identity records
- Household members, income, tax-filing, and insurance information
- SSI decision or disability records, if applicable
- Medical diagnoses, functional limitations, treatments, and equipment
- Any APD application, denial, or pre-enrollment notice
What to say when someone answers
“I need to apply for Medicaid for a child with disabilities. Please tell me whether to use family-related Medicaid, an SSI-linked route, or another disability pathway, and whether a separate APD application is needed for developmental-disability services.”
Small but useful: Write down the person’s name, the date, the exact next step, and when you should call again.
Do this in order

Submit the MyACCESS application if DCF identifies family-related Medicaid as the route.

Upload only readable documents and save the confirmation number.

Respond to requests by the date on the notice and keep copies.

If the child has a qualifying developmental disability, contact APD separately; Medicaid health coverage and waiver services are different decisions.
What happens next
DCF reviews financial and household eligibility and sends a written decision or document request. Other agencies may make disability or service-eligibility decisions under separate rules.

If coverage is urgent, ask about application status and health-care options while pending. If denied, read the notice for appeal rights instead of submitting duplicate applications without understanding the reason.
