How to Get Free Medicare Help From SHINE in Brevard County
SHINE counselors explain Medicare, Medicaid, costs and plan choices without selling insurance.
Start here
Call 407-514-1818 to request a Brevard SHINE appointment, or use the statewide Elder Helpline at 800-963-5337 and ask for SHINE. Florida lists counseling sites around Brevard, but schedules and walk-in availability change, so confirm before traveling.
What to have in front of you
- Medicare card with identifying numbers covered until you are with the counselor
- Letters from Medicare, Social Security, the plan, or a provider
- Current medication list and preferred pharmacies for plan comparisons
- List of doctors, hospitals, and equipment suppliers you need to keep
- Income and asset information if asking about Medicare Savings Programs or Extra Help
What to say when someone answers
“I need free SHINE counseling about [coverage, a bill, a plan choice, or help with costs]. Which Brevard appointment site has the soonest opening, and what documents should I bring?”
Small but useful: Write down the person’s name, the date, the exact next step, and when you should call again.
Do this in order
- 1
Choose one main question so the appointment starts with the urgent issue.
- 2
Confirm whether the appointment is in person, by phone, or virtual.
- 3
Bring original notices and a written list of prescriptions and providers.
- 4
Write down any deadline, next call, and application the counselor recommends.
What happens next
SHINE provides free, unbiased, confidential counseling through trained volunteers. It does not sell plans. The counselor can explain options and help with certain assistance applications, but Medicare or the relevant agency makes the decision.
If they say “we’ll put you on the list”
Ask for a phone appointment or another Brevard site. If a deadline is close, say the date when scheduling and call Medicare directly for appeal or enrollment instructions while waiting.
